Travertine Dining Table Buying Guide: Sizes, Weight and Care
A solid travertine dining table is one of the few pieces of furniture that gets better with age. The stone is warm, slightly porous and full of natural banding, and a well-made table will outlive every chair you put around it. Before you order, a few practical questions are worth answering.
1. Choose the size from your seating, not the room
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person and at least 36 inches of clearance between the table and the wall so chairs can move. As a rule of thumb:
- 48" oval – 4 people, small dining rooms and breakfast nooks
- 55" oval – 4 to 6 people
- 63" oval – 6 people comfortably
- 71" oval – 6 to 8 people
- 36"–48" round – 2 to 6 people, ideal for square rooms
We deliberately stop at 71 inches. Beyond that, a solid stone top becomes very heavy to deliver and move indoors, and the risk of damage in transit rises sharply.
2. Understand the weight
Solid travertine weighs roughly 2.5 tonnes per cubic metre. In practice our oval dining tables weigh between about 95 and 160 kg depending on size and base. They ship crated in parts — top and base separately — so two people can carry them in and assemble them in minutes.
3. Oval, round or rectangular?
Oval tops soften a room and make it easier to squeeze in an extra chair; round tables encourage conversation in square spaces; rectangular tables suit long, narrow dining rooms. Pedestal bases (single or double cone, fluted or sphere) leave more legroom than four legs.
4. Pick the stone
Beige travertine is the warmest and most forgiving of everyday marks. Calacatta Viola and black marble give stronger veining and contrast; onyx tops are the most dramatic but also the most delicate. Browse our travertine and marble tables to compare finishes.
5. Care
Every table is sealed before shipping. Use coasters under glasses, wipe spills — especially wine, coffee and citrus — promptly, and clean with a damp cloth and pH-neutral soap. Reseal once a year and the surface will keep its soft, honed look for decades.
